What to do when you cannot fall asleep or get back to sleep

You may find falling asleep a challenge. You may wake up in the middle of the night and not be able to get back to sleep. If you lie in bed awake for more than 15 or 20 minutes, GET UP and try one of the following tips:

  • Do something relaxing or not too stimulating, like reading a relaxing book or magazine.
  • Keep the lights low and do not turn on the computer or TV.
  • If you find yourself worrying, write your worries down, then let them go.
  • Eat a light snack if you are hungry - try something low in sugar.
  • Drink a cup of warm milk or decaffeinated tea.
  • Listen to relaxing music.
