Triggers and short-term rewards are not the whole picture of addiction. The third important pattern is long-term negative consequences.

Common long-term negative consequences of substance use include legal, health, financial, employment, or relationship problems. These problems may motivate someone you care about to change. Without facing these problems, they may be less likely to quit drinking and/or using drugs.

Consequences are the reason people change - the reason they quit drinking or using drugs.
