Description

Disability is an umbrella term for various experiences of impairment in major life activities. This course offers knowledge and skills to support delivery of culturally competent PTSD treatment to Veterans with disabilities.

Although disability is commonly used as an outcome measure in PTSD research, it is rarely framed as a diversity variable. The author introduces the concept of disability identity—or disability as diversity—moving beyond a medical model. As such, the basic tenants of culturally competent care for PTSD with a focus on Veterans with disabilities is discussed. Specific accommodations that can be made to PTSD treatments that tailor to the needs of those with disabilities are included.
