Mobile App: CBT-i Coach

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is an evidence-based psychotherapy for treating insomnia. CBT-i Coach is a mobile app for people who have trouble sleeping and are engaged in CBT-I with a mental health care provider.

Features include:

  • Tools to help relax while getting ready for sleep and suggestions for what to do when you can't sleep at night

NOTE: Insomnia is a serious mental health condition that often requires professional evaluation and treatment.

  • CBT-i Coach is intended to be used alongside face-to-face care with a healthcare professional.
  • CBT-i Coach can be used on its own, but it is not intended to replace therapy.
  • If you are not currently in CBT-I with a provider, Insomnia Coach is a free, self-help mobile app to guide you through developing and maintaining good sleep habits.

How to Use CBT-i Coach

CBT-i Coach is best used when you are in treatment with a therapist trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia. This form of therapy is available at many VA/DoD and other mental health clinics.

When you begin treatment, talk with your therapist about using CBT-i Coach mobile app. It is available for many devices, including: iPhone, Android phone, iPod Touch, iPad tablet and Android tablet.

CBT-i Coach gives you a structured program to get your biological clock reset to make it easier to go to sleep and to sleep through the night.

CBT-i Coach is a free and publicly available mobile app for people who have trouble sleeping and are engaged in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) with a clinical provider.

Privacy and Security

Any data created by the user of this app is only as secure as the phone/device itself. Use the security features on your device if you are concerned about the privacy of your information. Users are free to share data, but as the self-monitoring data belong to each user, HIPAA concerns do not apply while the data is stored or shared. If the user were to transmit or share data with a health care provider, the provider must then comply with HIPAA rules.

Who Created CBT-i Coach

CBT-i Coach was created by the VA's National Center for PTSD in partnership with Stanford University Medical Center, the Department of Defense's National Center for Telehealth and Technology and DoD's DHA Connected Health and VA Sierra Pacific Mental Illness Research, Education, & Clinical Center.
