Cognitive Behavioral Nightmare Therapies and PTSD Author(s):

Kristi Pruiksma, PhD DBSM

Description

Among individuals diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), nightmares are common. A variety of cognitive behavioral interventions show promise for the treatment of nightmares, while also improving insomnia, PTSD, and depression. However, there is a wide range of names for the various treatments tested in randomized controlled trials (RCTs), creating challenges in comparing treatment efficacy by protocol in systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

This online course establishes a definition for nightmares and summarizes data regarding their prevalence across sample groups. The author provides an overview of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Nightmares (CBT-N) protocols, describing research of the efficacy of CBT-N in PTSD.
