Cultural Considerations for Conducting Trauma-Focused Treatment With Latinx Patients Author(s):

Natalia Garcia Gonzalez, PhD

Augustina Colombo Eiff, LICSW

Description

There is growing interest in the implementation of culturally-responsive mental health care. Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) are first-line, evidence-based treatments for PTSD and have been successfully implemented in low-income samples and with persons of color, including Latinx individuals. However, cultural and systemic factors may interfere with effective treatment delivery.

This course describes several culturally-responsive strategies for therapists to consider when conducting PE or CPT with Latinx patients to improve clinical outcomes, such as creating and building trust and rapport, conducting culturally-informed assessment, investing in psychoeducation, optimizing exposures, challenging beliefs with cultural humility, and problem-solving common barriers to treatment engagement.

Goals and Objectives

  • Describe the rationale for culturally-responsive implementation of evidence-based practices
  • Describe aspects of Latinx culture that may influence delivery of PE and/or CPT
  • Identify key strategies to consider when delivering PE and/or CPT to Latinx patients
