Bridging the Gap: Using VA Mental Health Apps to Support Treatment for PTSD Author(s):

Colleen Becket-Davenport, PsyD

Jason Owen, PhD, MPH

Description

Digital resources such as online programs and mobile applications (apps) are an important and helpful tool at all stages across the continuum of mental health care. Given the potential broad reach of these technologies, they may bridge wait times to recovery-oriented treatment, supplement mental health treatment, and promote self-management of symptoms.

This online course describes free, publicly available VA Mental Health Apps designed to support the mental health needs of those with PTSD and related concerns. The authors review the current research and latest clinical developments in the use of mental health apps created by the National Center for PTSD for self-care and for enhancement of clinical care as a treatment companion.

Goals and Objectives

  • Describe the empirical support for the integration of mobile apps into mental health treatment and as a part of self-management of symptoms
  • Describe the base components of NCPTSD's self-care and treatment companion mobile apps
  • Implement various approaches to integrating mental health apps across the continuum of care
