PTSD and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Author(s):

Stephanie Sacks, PhD

Description

Most individuals with PTSD also meet criteria for at least one additional mental health diagnosis. Some difficulties that co-occur with PTSD, such as substance use disorders, mood disorders, and sleep issues, are better studied, understood and integrated into the knowledge base regarding best practices for the treatment of PTSD. However, there is a scarcity of research, information and clinical guidance for individuals that meet diagnostic criteria PTSD and co-occurring obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

This course helps to bridge that gap by highlighting emerging literature on co-occurring PTSD and OCD. The author provides tools for effective differential diagnosis of PTSD and OCD and outlines clinical tips and guidance for effective treatment when a client meets criteria for both PTSD and OCD.

Goals and Objectives

  • Identify the similarities and differences between PTSD and OCD
  • Discuss at least 2 effective and well-validated clinical measures to assist in the evaluation of OCD
  • Describe the gold-standard treatments of co-occurring PTSD and OCD
  • Discuss effective treatment planning with clients who have co-occurring PTSD and OCD to address their concerns
