Description
Shared decision-making (SDM) is a framework which is increasingly recognized as a best practice when deciding on treatment options, yet very few studies have examined how best to conduct SDM in a mental health context. This course helps providers to think about how best to communicate with patients about PTSD treatment options in a way that will encourage patient autonomy and consideration of best practice treatments.
The authors review the results of current studies that examined patient perspectives on how providers talk with their patients about PTSD treatments, as well as how patients and consumers interpret treatment names, descriptions, and concepts. In addition, the course provides an overview of the tenets of SDM and the studies of SDM in the context of PTSD.
Goals and Objectives
- Describe the tenets of shared decision-making
- Describe ways that clinicians can encourage use of evidence-based psychotherapies through the use of shared decision-making
- Understand how patients may interpret or misinterpret names and other information about treatments
