Description
PTSD during pregnancy has been found to increase risk for negative perinatal outcomes for both mother and baby. Concerns include increased risk for preterm birth, low infant birthweight and postpartum depression. Research among women Veterans is revealing similar patterns, as well as finding a negative impact of military sexual trauma (MST).
This course reviews research on the associations between trauma, PTSD and perinatal health, with a focus on women Veterans. The presenter discusses potential neurobiological mechanisms for negative perinatal outcomes among women with PTSD as well as treatments for perinatal PTSD and postpartum depression.
