Description
Experiencing a traumatic event is related to poor health. This course provides a review of the physical health effects of traumatic exposure, discussing research findings from both civilian and military populations.
The author illustrates how a person's reaction--posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) especially--mediates the effect of exposure using a multidimensional model. Plausible mechanisms through which PTSD could promote poorer health, such as allostatic load, are described. Clinical implications, including trauma-informed care, are discussed in relation to mixed findings for the effects of PTSD treatment on physical health.
