PTSD and Schizophrenia-Spectrum Disorders: Assessment and Treatment Author(s):

Stephanie Sacks, PhD

Description

Individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders experience traumatic events and suffer from PTSD at disproportionately higher rates than the general population. Unfortunately, there are numerous barriers to the appropriate assessment and treatment of PTSD in those with psychosis. This course provides guidance to overcoming such challenges when working with clients who have co-occurring schizophrenia-spectrum disorders and PTSD.

This course describes the relationship between trauma, PTSD and psychosis. The author reviews the evidence base and clinical recommendations to facilitate assessment and treatment of PTSD in those with co-occurring schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Strategies for treating PTSD in such individuals are included.

  • Discuss how to overcome common barriers to the assessment and treatment of PTSD in those with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders
  • Identify the current evidence base for treating PTSD in those with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders
