Description
Given the significant co-occurrence of chronic pain and PTSD, the field has aimed to clarify the complex interrelations between these conditions in adults. However, despite increased understanding of theoretical models of shared vulnerability, triple vulnerability, mutual maintenance and the role of avoidance, there remains a clinical challenge in how best to provide care to these often-complex multi-need patients.
This course identifies best practices for treating those with PTSD and chronic pain. The presenters provide information about the prevalence of chronic pain and PTSD as well as the relationship between these conditions, explaining the evidence base for four core conceptual models. The course then reviews treatment approaches for the management of co-occurring chronic pain and PTSD.
Goals and Objectives
- Identify the conceptual similarities between chronic pain and PTSD
- Describe the core models for understanding these co-occurring conditions
- Discuss the evidence base for the four core models
- Discuss best practices for addressing co-occurring chronic pain and PTSD
