Treating PTSD in Primary Care Author(s):

Kyle Possemato, PhD

Description

PTSD commonly occurs among primary care patients in both Veterans Affairs and community settings. Research demonstrates that most primary care patients with PTSD do not receive adequate PTSD treatment. Evidence-based screenings and treatments for PTSD that are appropriate for the primary care setting are now available.

This online course details gold standard screening methods and describes several brief treatments for PTSD, including their evidence base and implementations status (at time of presentation). Strategies to engage patients in shared decision-making on when to treat in primary care and when to refer to specialty mental health settings are also discussed.

Goals and Objectives

  • Identify the recommended primary care screening methods for PTSD and common co-morbidities
  • Describe several brief treatment options for PTSD, including their evidence base
  • Demonstrate how to engage patients in shared decision-making on treatment options and settings for PTSD
