Pastoral Care

Pastoral care involves joining with individuals in the midst of their suffering, creating a safe space for disclosure, and listening carefully and supporting them as they take inventory of the emotional, psychological, and spiritual resources that they have for their life journey. It involves careful listening, and measuring the impact that life events have made upon the individual. Using well-constructed questions and measures can aid clergy members in more accurately understanding the experience of the Service member or Veteran.
In this section of the toolkit, you will find information about making a referral to mental health treatment, helping Service members and Veterans understand the benefits of mental health treatment, motivating Service members and Veterans to seek help for mental health issues, supporting Service members and Veterans who are in treatment for PTSD and other mental health conditions, dealing with mental health emergencies, measuring the spiritual impact of traumatic stress, and self-care.
