Rural Provider PTSD Toolkit
PTSD Consultation Program
In a large clinic, your first instinct might be to head down the hall and hope that a trusted colleague's door is open so that you are able to discuss a complicated case. However, if your situation is like many providers working in rural areas, there is no one with this expertise down the hall.
Expert clinicians in the PTSD Consultation Program are ready to be a virtual colleague who can provide this kind of consultation. The program, a part of the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), is working to support all health care providers including those in rural communities who treat Veterans with PTSD. The program is staffed by psychologists, psychiatrists, pharmacists, and other mental health professionals who are available by email or phone to discuss PTSD-related assessment, treatments, medications, and educational resources. No question is too big or too small.
The services are free and available to any provider treating a U.S. Veteran. Consultation is consistent with evidence-based practices for PTSD and consensus statements such as the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for PTSD.

Program Director
"We're here to support providers and to help them get the resources they need to treat Veterans with PTSD. The program doesn't provide services directly to Veterans, but providers are encouraged to use the consultation we provide in the ways that seem the most helpful for their patients."
