Resources for Managers
Organizational indicators of burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS) include high job turnover, low morale, absenteeism, and job dissatisfaction.14 Managers who are attuned to burnout and STS in the workplace can better support their workforce, point workers toward appropriate resources, and institute procedural changes that can reduce the risk to providers of developing stress, burnout and STS in the work environment. While an employee's level of stress, burnout, and/or STS is confidential information, it is recommended that managers provide information tailored to their workgroup, and inform employees about appropriate resources.
Most importantly, managers can help by instituting policies or opportunities (e.g., peer supervision) that may reduce stress, burnout, and/or STS in the workforce.
The Information for Managers handout below gives more information for making changes that may reduce burnout and STS in your employees.
The self-assessment section of this toolkit includes a number of self-assessment tools that may be helpful for employees.
