Cognitive Strategies

The effective use of cognitive strategies is well known to mental health providers who work with trauma survivors. For example, changing beliefs and coping strategies, perspective taking, letting go, and mindfulness strategies are healthy ways to work with the thinking patterns most commonly related to PTSD, and they have also been shown to reduce burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS). In addition to these strategies, practicing self-awareness has been shown to increase the balance between active and emotion-focused coping,51,52 foster resilience and growth, and improve one's sense of humor.2,53 All of these factors reduce emotional exhaustion and depersonalization.54,55 The challenge is to find ways to implement these strategies into each day.
